Atlanta recently played host to a magnificent celebration as the legendary production powerhouse, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, returned for a special homecoming. The iconic duo was honored by the Living Legends Foundation, an event captured by Damatrix Studios and the DSN Network.
A Tribute to Black Music Excellence
The event was a tribute to enduring brilliance in the music industry. The Living Legends Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, is dedicated to recognizing music executives who have been instrumental in marketing Black Music, while also providing crucial assistance to music professionals who have fallen on difficult times.
The evening was helmed by key figures in the industry, including David C. Linton, Chairman of the Living Legends Foundation. Mr. Linton, a respected veteran who has served as Program Director for Jazz 91.9 WCLK in Atlanta, and a past executive at Capitol and Arista Records, was present to honor the duo. His induction into the National Black Radio Hall of Fame for Leadership in 2023 underscores the high caliber of professionals celebrating the honorees.
The Interview: A Return to Roots
The highlight of the night was the exclusive interview with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, conducted by Q from DSN Network.
For the duo, the recognition felt like a true homecoming. They reminisced about how their wildly successful career effectively launched in Atlanta with their work on The S.O.S. Band’s first huge record. They even recalled a famous snowstorm in the city that led to their “fired” (or “freed,” as Terry Lewis jokes) moment from France, which ultimately set their legendary trajectory in motion. Being back among friends and celebrating the “greatness of the black folks” in the industry brought them immense joy.
The Enduring Love of Music
When asked about the secret to their longevity, the Grammy-winning artists attributed their success to one simple, profound truth: a deep, abiding love for music. Terry Lewis shared that they wake up every day with new ideas and feel incredibly privileged to practice what he calls “the divine art of music,” a craft they never take for granted. Jimmy Jam added that their collaboration with phenomenal Black Excellence artists is a constant source of inspiration, enabling them to continuously draw from that creativity and bless millions with music that moves and celebrates.
The Meaning of the Event
This event was more than just an awards ceremony; it was a powerful affirmation of the legacy and continuous contribution of Black professionals to the global music landscape. It served as a moment for icons to reflect on their past, celebrate the present, and inspire the next generation, all while recognizing the foundational support provided by organizations like the Living Legends Foundation.
